| Sunscreens have ingredients
that either block the sun's rays, or that absorb the sun's rays. The best
sunscreens have both. Titanium Dioxide is an ingredient that blocks (reflects) the sun's rays. Ingredients that absorb solar radiation fall into 2 categories: UVA absorbers and UVB absorbers. Again, the best sunscreens have both.
Avobenzone (Parsol 1789) This ingredient absorbs the whole spectrum of UVA rays and is currently the best UVA absorber available in the United States. It does not provide any UVB (burning ray) absorption. Benzophenones. This ingredient includes oxybenzone and dioxybenzone. Absorbs a portion of the UVA spectrum and absorbs UVB rays. There are many ingredients that absorb UVB rays. They are used in combination with each other and with UVA absorbers and with UV blockers like Titanium Dioxide. I recently purchased sunscreen without Avobenzone. Since I've learned that Avobenzone (Parsol 1789) is the best UVA absorber, I'll throw that sunscreen away and get a more effective sunscreen. Get a sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection and that contains Avobenzone (Parsol 1789). Don't just pick up the cheapest sunscreen on the shelf. The good ones are not hard to find. READ THE LABEL! Don't buy a sunscreen over the internet unless the merchant provides a list of the ingredients. Most do. Ecamsule (Mexoryl) - just approved for sale in the United States, this ingredient is the best protection against UVA rays available.
